Technician - HVAC


The HVAC Technician will operate, maintain and repair all heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment in the Clifton Campus power plant, as well as related mechanical equipment at three other college campuses located in Hamilton and Butler Counties. The HVAC Technician is responsible for operation of high voltage feed and transfer systems, preventive maintenance program and Energy Management system programs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Operation of incoming utilities (gas/water/fire main systems) to distribution networks.
  • Operate, maintain and repair boilers in a safe and economical method.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all power plant auxiliary equipment and support systems associated with hot water re-heat system, steam boilers, chillers, motor control centers, condensate, vacuum pump and feed water system and all related controls.
  • Operate, maintain and repair domestic hot water system including hot water circulation pumps, controls and regulators.
  • Operate, maintain and repair air compressors and associated equipment including, but not limited to, pneumatic air piping systems and air dryers.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all chemical treatment equipment, which includes testing of boiler water, hot water heating system, condenser water and cooling tower water.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all chillers and coolers according to equipment service manual, established guidelines and using sound judgement for safe and economical operation.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all chill water pumps, condenser water pumps, motors, piping system, controls and regulators.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all cooling towers, condenser water systems and all associated equipment including fans, pumps, motors, piping, controls and regulators.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all associated auxiliary equipment in boiler room associated with chillers, boilers, pumps and air compressors.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all HVAC transfer equipment to include air handler units, Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, fan coils, exhaust fans, radiant and convection heaters and pneumatic/electric controls.
  • Maintain proper filter replacement and coil cleaning as per preventative maintenance schedules in all HVAC units as applicable.
  • Operate, maintain and control all HVAC systems throughout buildings via Siemens Insight and TAC Systems.
  • Operate, maintain and repair all DX air conditioning systems and their controls. Repair refrigerant leaks, add refrigerant and adjust controls when necessary.
  • Ensure the safe operations of all elevator systems; meet inspection requirements and provide emergency service.
  • Respond to college emergency situations related to HVAC, Boiler, Electrical, Elevator, Utilities and Fire Alarms.
  • Make switch over from heating to cooling (vice versa) on all related equipment and thermostats as necessary.
  • Make temperature adjustment and calibrate pneumatic electric temperature controls as necessary.
  • Operate and maintain emergency generator and emergency transfer system. Test generator once per week.
  • Complete continuing education and training to ensure technical skill level and knowledge is current.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Plant Engineering Manager to meet the service needs of the College, and its employees, students and visitors.
  • Maintain power plant and mechanical areas in a safe and sanitary condition.

Minimum requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Universal EPA Certification required.
  • At least five (5) years of hands-on experience on boilers, chillers, pneumatic/electric controls, pumps and HVAC equipment.
  • This is a second shift position. Flexible shifts and the ability to be on a rotational call basis is required.
  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, lifting, stooping, or carrying of equipment and materials may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Incumbent may be exposed to extreme temperatures, close quarter situations, high and precarious places, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Competencies/Knowledge

  • Associate's Degree or higher in HVAC and/or related field combined with a minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience on boilers, chiller, pneumatic/electric controls, pumps and HVAC equipment.
  • Experience with BAS (Building Automation Systems) including Trance, Evapco, Siemens, TAC and Marley.
  • Relevant HVAC and/or Plumbing certifications including: EPA Refrigerant Handling - EPA 608, Pressure Piping Certificate(s), NATE / ICE Certification, 6G Pipe Welding Certificate, Med Gas Certifications, ASSE 6000 Series, Backflow Preventer Certification, OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Training, Aerial Lift / Fork truck Certification.
