Director, Office of Disability Services


The Director of the Cincinnati State Office of Disability Services oversees the application of and compliance with federal and state requirements and regulations regarding access for students with disabilities, and educates the College community about the needs and legal rights of students with disabilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Serve as liaison for faculty, staff and other campus departments to coordinate reasonable accommodations between the area and/or internal and external departments, groups, agencies and individuals.

Serve as a resource on disability issues to the College collaborating closely with faculty, staff and administration on problem solving and dispute resolution regarding disability services and respond to any parent and faculty concerns.

Provide leadership and facilitate processes for the use of adaptive technology including access to textbooks and other materials in alternative format.

Review student documentation to determine eligibility for services and implementing reasonable accommodations for students registered with the Office of Disability Services.

Promote student self-advocacy and work to promote an environment of access and equal opportunity on campus.

Manage the Office of Disability Services to ensure accountability for and effective utilization of all resources, including setting and adhering to unit budget and developing proposals for funding initiatives.

Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Office of Disability Services, staff and resources (direct services, interpreters, computer lab, testing). This includes providing training, direct supervision and guide the daily work of personnel.

Collect and analyze relevant program and outcomes data (i.e., tracking usage, student satisfaction and student success).

Meet with students, parents, faculty and staff as required to ensure students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of educational experience.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience working with adult populations with disabilities and developing/administering accommodations plans. (Relevant work experience must be post-graduate work experience.) 

Master's Degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation, or a related/relevant field. 

Experience developing accommodation plans. 

Extensive knowledge and interpretation of disability legislation related to access and accommodations for adults. Knowledge of Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, ADAAA 2009.

Supervisory/managerial experience, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills, ability to interact with a diverse population, computer (adaptive software) knowledge and budget experience. 

Knowledge of relevant support resources that may be available in the community to serve disabled adults. 

Occasional evening or weekend hours required.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least three (3) years of post-graduate work experience in a college or university setting, working with adult students with disabilities and handling accommodations.

Knowledge of all categories of disabilities and appropriate accommodations in a higher education environment.

Knowledge of and experience adhering to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other appropriate laws pertaining to higher education and equal access to students with disabilities. 

Experience teaching in higher education and/or teaching adult learners.

Desired Competencies:

Knowledge of functional limitations of disabilities, their effect(s), understanding their academic implications, and the determination of the appropriate accommodation(s).

Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act and all applicable state and federal disability statutes as well as general awareness of current literature, and legal cases in post-secondary education

Capability to develop effective internal and external relationships that support the recruitment of adult learners to the College, provide access to resources and services for disabled adults, and assist faculty and staff to support the academic success of students.

The ability to work well with people, show empathy, and act as a mediator, advocate, and leader.

NOTE: Candidates offered an interview may be required to provide a presentation to members of the college community.
