Annually Contracted Instructor EMS All Campus Locations


Cincinnati State Technical and Community College invites applications for an Annually Contracted Instructor for a one year appointment.   Annually Contracted Instructors (ACI) are full-time, non-tenure-track faculty members whose sole responsibility is to provide classroom instruction of credit-bearing courses. ACI duties shall not include responsibilities as program chair, department chair, cooperative education coordinator, advisor, counselor, librarian, instructional designer, or any other faculty responsibilities.

Qualified candidates will need to teach college-level courses to our technical, transfer degree and non-degree seeking students in our Health and Public Safety Division in areas of the Emergency Medical Services up to and including Clinical Placement, Clinical Coordination, and Clinical Instructor for the Clinical Courses in the Paramedic and Emergency Medical Technician Programs. Instruction may take place in a classroom, clinical setting, or via distance or online learning web portals.  

As part of our team of highly qualified faculty, EMS Instructors are expected to provide high quality instruction and work with the Associate Deans, Dean and other Administrative staff and faculty to improve student learning experiences. Instructors may be assigned other instructional responsibilities as determined by the Dean or Associate Dean.


Cincinnati State Technical and Community College was chartered in 1969, and today offers more than 75 associate degree and 40 certificate programs in business technologies, health and public safety, engineering technologies, humanities and sciences and information technologies. Our mission is to provide the more than 10,000 students enrolled in our programs each term with student-focused, accessible, quality technical and general education, academic transfer, experiential and co-operative education and workforce development.

Although the main campus is located in Clifton close to downtown Cincinnati, the College also operates branch campuses and satellite locations throughout the Greater Cincinnati and Tri-State areas, including our newest Middletown location. Opportunities for learning expand beyond our campuses through one of the largest cooperative education programs in the United States which provides our students with real-world experience working with our diverse local, national and global business partners located all across the country.

Essential Duties:

Teach assigned introductory and upper-level EMS courses following established course descriptions, course objectives, and syllabi including clinical courses. 

  • Develop and use of a departmental approved syllabus for each course or laboratory within college, discipline, and departmental guidelines and submit one copy to the Program Chair
  • Responsible for student placement, orientation, coordination, instruction, and evaluation of students for clinical courses.
  • Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and inform them of their progress in the course in a timely manner.
  • Address student issues in a timely manner, including communicating issues to program chair.
  • Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods of Emergency Medical Services content in Emergency Medical Services Courses.
  • Assist with program and course assessments and reviews to maximize student learning outcomes in the EMS programs
  • Assist and support with maintaining Ohio and CoAEMSP Accreditation for the EMS Program.
  • Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and which are appropriate for students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Keep accurate student records and submit related reports and forms within requested timelines.
  • Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs.
  • Use equipment and facilities responsibly and courteously. Where appropriate, assist the chair with the routine maintenance of instructional laboratories.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications to teach EMS Courses.

The per semester duties include but are not limited to the following: 

  1. a) Creating course syllabi and providing copies to the program chair and, for lab courses, to the Medical Director prior to the beginning of each semester.
  2. b) Preparing content for instruction including: developing lectures, designing classroom activities and assessments, maintaining a Blackboard course site, studying the lab materials before the lab time, and requesting training and help in areas when needed.
  3. c) Instruction in the classroom and lab, covering all of the objectives at the appropriate college level while maintaining a good working classroom environment that fosters learning and safety in lecture and lab classes.
  4. d) Proper lab instruction including monitoring students at all times during lab sessions, cleaning up after lab sessions, adhering to all safety regulations, and reporting back to the program chair, lab staff or Campus Police (whichever is appropriate immediately, and then always report to the department chair) when a safety rule has been violated.
  5. e) Posting student grades throughout the semester on your course Blackboard site.
  6. f) Responding promptly to requests for student progress reports sent from Student Support Services, advisors, the Director of Retention, etc.
  7. g) Meeting students by appointment when requested and responding promptly to emails.
  8. h) Keeping your Outlook calendar up-to date.
  9. i) Making recommendations about student issues as they pertain to your course.
  10. j) Taking notes about a situation that may have arisen in your class or lab for documentation to the program chair or administration.
  11. k) Submitting final grades to the Registrar through Blackboard's MyServices by the required deadline.
  12. l) Completing a grade audit regarding a student that you have had. This can be requested up to one year after the course, so please keep electronic Excel spreadsheets of your grades archived for at least one year.
  13. m) Travel back and forth to your course regardless of campus location.

Minimum Qualifications: (Must have upon date of hire.)

  • Bachelor's Degree required from an accredited college or university
  • Must be a State of Ohio Certified Paramedic
  • Must be a State of Ohio Certified EMS Instructor
  • At least 3 years college level classroom or industry experience in the teaching subject area.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to act effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to interact successfully with academic as well as business and regulatory personnel.
  • Some night or weekend hours may be required.
  • Demonstrate competence and interest in the use of technology in the classroom and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies.
  • Practical/Laboratory Instructional experience including lab set-up and preparation for dissections and other academic procedures in an educational setting.
  • Experience using diverse methods of classroom technology, and innovative instructional/academic support systems and programs.
  • Demonstrate skill and/or knowledge teaching life science methods and issues.
  • Commitment to student excellence and continued improvement of instruction


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in the Emergency Medical Services including the same criteria as the minimum qualifications.
  • American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS Instruction Certification.
  • 1+ year of teaching experience at paramedic level
