Library Director, Johnnie Mae Berry Library

The Library Director is responsible for leading, coordinating, and managing all aspects of library resources and services in support of academic programs and student-focused intellectual needs. The library is an academic department, reporting directly to the Provost/Academic Vice President.

The candidate will possess demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to work effectively and collegially with an established team. Knowledge of academic libraries and related technology is essential. The Director will formulate goals, policies and procedures in fulfillment of the library's mission with the approval of the Provost. The Director will oversee the library budget and staff, which includes two faculty librarians. In addition, the Director will represent the library on official College committees, advise the Provost on library related matters and represent the College at other local and state meetings as appropriate.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides leadership and strategic direction for all library operations, programs, services and resources in alignment with the College's mission and core values
  • Directs and manages library faculty and staff in adherence to performance standards, collective bargaining agreements, applicable state and federal laws, and College policies and procedures
  • Develops and fosters a strong, cohesive library team to cultivate a student-focused environment where professionalism, collegiality and collaboration are encouraged
  • Assists and supports library staff in providing Reference, Library Instruction, and Access Services
  • Fosters a commitment to inclusivity and equity in resource management and interactions with in-person, online, College Credit Plus and remote library users
  • Manages and monitors library budget, allocating funds to support assignment and accreditation needs, the operation of the facility and personnel expenses
  • Collaborates with faculty librarians to make decisions regarding the acquisition, continuation of, and access to electronic resources (e.g. databases, periodicals).
  • Promotes transparency and understanding of library activities and services by communicating data and changes via academic meetings, presentations, and other promotional methods (library newsletter, Daily News, social media, email)
  • Maintains professional communications with Academic Divisions, faculty and Administration to inform planning and decision-making for library goals in support of Academics and accreditation needs
  • Coordinates effectively with other departments to ensure the provision of resources in support of teaching and learning
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with vendors and consortia partners including OhioLINK/SEARCHOHIO and represents Cincinnati State at consortia meetings/conferences where policies are discussed
  • Collects data and completes internal and external reports, including IPEDS and ACRL statistics
  • Keeps abreast of new trends and innovations in academic libraries by reading current literature, communicating with colleagues, and participating in professional meetings and workshops
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution (M LS or MLIS)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an academic library, with at least 3 years of public or information services experience
  • Minimum 3 years of management and leadership experience
  • At least 2 years of experience working with ethnically, culturally, socially or economically diverse populations
  • Working knowledge of technologies that provide and enhance library services, including knowledge of online research resources, integrated library management systems, and instructional technologies.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed, to ensure continuity of library services during hours of operation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience strategically and successfully managing fiscal resources.
  • Demonstrated expertise of open educational resources, information-seeking behaviors, accessibility, and/or user experience topics.
